The legend of the DIP: A mythological creature of Tarragona

“The Dip is a mythological creature from the Tarragona province, described as an evil, furry dog that dwells in the forests and feeds by sucking the blood of people and livestock.”
The Dip, the mythological being
The legend of the Dips is very ancient. In the altarpiece of the Church of Santa Marina de Pratdip, dated 1602, there are already representations of these vampiric dogs. They also appear in another altarpiece from 1730, silhouetted against a golden background..

Traditionally, it was believed that the Dips inhabited the mountains surrounding Pratdip. They only came out at night, their dark silhouettes appearing on the horizon, their eyes glowing in the darkness. The villagers feared finding their flocks attacked, bearing the bite marks of the Dips that had drained their blood.
The name “Pratdip” comes from “Prat” (meadow) and “Dip,” directly referencing these mythological beings. In fact, the municipality’s coat of arms features the image of a Dip, highlighting the significance of this legend in the local identity.
